Pyrantel embonate

In horses and donkeys: control and treatment of adult infections with large and small strongyles, Oxyuris, Parascaris and Anoplocephala perfoliata. The product is also effective against benzimidazole-resistant strains of small strongyles.

Do not use in cases of hypersensitivity to pyrantel embonate or any excipients. The cited veterinary SPC for Embotape also contraindicates use in foals less than 4 weeks of age and in severely debilitated animals.

Avoid too frequent or repeated use of anthelmintics from the same class and avoid underdosing. Suspected resistance should be investigated with appropriate tests, and use should take local or regional susceptibility information into account. The same syringe should only be used to dose two animals when both are healthy and are either running together or kept on the same premises in direct contact. Avoid direct skin contact and wash hands after handling.

Intestinal impaction and colic have been reported; frequency could not be estimated in the cited veterinary SPC. Colic may occur within approximately 30 minutes of treatment, and intestinal impaction may occur in foals heavily infected with Parascaris equorum.
