An acute to chronic infectious disease of chickens and turkeys caused by Mycoplasma synoviae. The disease primarily affects synovial membranes, tendon sheaths, and bursae, resulting in exudative synovitis, tenosynovitis, and bursitis. Upper respiratory tract infection is usually subclinical, but the organism is also associated with chronic airsacculitis and respiratory disease in chickens.
